This Independence Day, 2021 let’s pledge to make India healthy

Every year on 15th August, we celebrate the glory of Free India and uphold the pride and honour of being an Indian. As we are gifted with this liberty by our ancestors and great freedom fighters, it is important to recognize this freedom, not just as a right to do anything we like, but as an opportunity to do what is right. Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the Government of India has launched the campaign called “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”, a Fit India Freedom Run 2.0 to promote the idea of “Physical/Virtual Run”, encouraging fitness and helping us to get freedom from obesity, laziness, stress, anxiety, and all the other diseases. Why is it important to recognize this freedom from all diseases?

India faces malnutrition of every kind, including wasting, stunting, being underweight, and even obesity. Around 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese, while 462 million are underweight where Women, infants, children, and even adolescents are at risk of low health that reduces productivity, and hinders economic growth, which can perpetuate a cycle of poverty and ill-health. This is our opportunity to address all forms of malnutrition and create a commitment to achieve our nutrition targets that can end hunger and ensure food security to promote wellbeing for all of all ages in India. Let us see how?

Frequent Health Check-up

Caution is the parent of safety. The one who is forewarned is the one who is forearmed, hence it’s important to know your body and be assured that it’s functioning well. There may be a running history of certain ailments in your family that your body may not show any symptoms of, especially at an early stage. A preventive health check-up can help you detect the presence of some genetic disorders that are likely to occur in the future. After all, it’s better to be safe than to be sorry.

Due to the high birth rate in India, a very huge amount of infants are born with genetic disorders like thalassemia; sickle cell disease; hypothyroidism; iron deficiency, and even down syndrome every year that deserve to be screened in the newborn period itself. A frequent help check-up may help you start your treatment well in time rather than having to spend a huge amount on your medical bills later. Having a regular health checkup gives a crucial idea of adaptation of cleaner eating patterns, by understanding what to eat and what can be avoided to stay healthy.

Conduction of regular health checkups from time to time is also beneficial in getting more informed and aware of the latest trends and inventions occurring in the medical world.

Regular Exercise

India is the land of yogis and has always promoted the significance of physical movements through Yoga since ancient times. The word exercise itself places the condition to be in an active operation. Exercise is not just a course of action, it’s an actual awakening that your body needs once you are awake from your sleep. Regular Physical training gives you the energy needed to deal with a challenging lifestyle. Different forms of exercise help you build your muscle and bone strength and shred those extra calories off your body. If you are suffering from obesity, regular exercise can help you get fit and reduce the risk of prolonged diseases. It ensures balanced blood/sugar levels promoting better mental and emotional health as well.

Up to 5 million deaths, a year could be averted if the global population was more active. WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity throughout the week and only 10% of adults in India meet this recommendation. On that note, The “Fit India Movement” was launched by Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi to make fitness an integral part of our daily lives and bring about behavioural changes that move us towards a more physically active lifestyle.

Adequate Sleep

Sleep deprivation is considered an epidemic in India and it’s the second most sleep-deprived country in the world, increasing the risk of diabetes, heart attack, and cancer, among others. A human body needs at least a 7-hour sleep but some people face difficulty in getting undisturbed sleep that can lead to neurodegenerative disorders. Inadequate sleep disrupts the body clock creating changes, anger, anxiety, depression, and complete imbalance. This affects individual productivity and can affect growth on a broader level.

Not just the adults but even the children belonging to urban and rural areas suffer from inadequate sleep. Small steps like limiting your screen time; caffeine intake; disciplined routine and nutrition can fix your sleep schedule.

Proper Nutrition

A human body does produce sufficient nutrition in itself, hence it’s important to assure an adequate intake of nutrients that can treat the different deficiencies in a human body. May it be protein; vitamins; iron or different acids. There are different combinations of healthy micronutrients that can help you fight malnourishment of any kind depending on your body type. One should avoid excessive consumption of alcohol or cigarettes or aerated drinks and always prefer home-cooked food over junk food.

Did you know the nutritional status of a country can be maintained on a broader level through the technique of Food Fortification effectively? Food Fortification is the process of adding essential micronutrients to certain foods during their production. Rice, wheat, salt, oil and milk being our staple food are the most fortified food in India and its fortification has proven to be one of the most scientific, effective and successful strategies to fight malnutrition in India. In India, The Food Safety & Standards Authority along with some prominent stakeholders regulates the functioning of food fortification and enables public\private sector partnerships in this sector. Hexagon Nutrition is one of the eminent stakeholders in this area that has strived to serve people in India and across the globe for 70 years now. With its micronutrient premixes and Clinical Nutrition Supplements it has reached millions of people and we pledge to continue and free India from malnutrition and its hidden hunger.
